The Story Behind Yukon Wilderness Evidence

Darlene L. Turner

In Yukon Wilderness Evidence, forensic botanist, Dr. Keeley Ash, is called to a crime scene where roots have grown into skeletal remains and she has to help date the tree to determine how long the bones have been hidden deep in the Yukon forest. The constables accompanying her are attacked and she calls for help. When she’s abducted by hunters, she hides evidence and vows to bring the criminals to justice. Paramedic, Brett Ryerson arrives to tend to the injured and discovers a woman from his past. They target and kidnap her before his eyes, sending him racing into the forest to save her life.

What was the inspiration behind Yukon Wilderness Evidence? I’ve always been fascinated by forensics and when I was brainstorming ideas, I remembered hearing about a case where plants were used to help catch a criminal. After further research, my storyline emerged. I also thought it would be fun to put a family of hunters into the wilderness to create havoc in my hero and heroine’s lives.

The forensic botany research I did for this book was mind-boggling! I devoured these reference books: Planting Clues: How Plants Solve Crimes by David J. Gibson and Forensic Botany: A Practical Guide by David W. Hall and Jason Byrd.

So what does a forensic botanist do? To put it simply, they examine the plant materials (pollen, seeds, plants, etc) that are found at a crime scene to determine if they include any useful information. In my story, Dr. Ash has to inspect the tree rings to find out how long the remains were buried among the roots. Did you know that light-colored rings suggest growth in the spring and early summer? Dark ones suggest late summer and fall. Cool, huh?

Writing stories can be so fascinating when authors dive deep into research to make them authentic. I hope you enjoyed finding out what inspired Yukon Wilderness Evidence and the fun research it entailed. Happy reading!
