MY WRITING ROUTINE
By Donna Gartshore

It’s a pleasure to be here today. Thank you for having me!

Today I am going to talk about my writing routine, although I must confess that I use the word ‘routine’ rather loosely, as I simply do my best to find daily writing time while still working a busy and challenging daytime job.

I do like to get to my writing as early as possible in the day. But, before I sit down to create, I make it a priority to spend some time with God in the morning, because I give Him full credit for any of the creative gifts I’ve been given.

I usually read a devotional and look up any of the Bible passages referenced. I also like to write out scripture as it helps me focus on what I’m reading.

I also like a reasonably tidy environment (stacks of books around don’t count! J ), so I make sure that my writing area is prepared before I settle in.

I have always been a short sprint rather than a marathon writer. When I’m writing under contract, I’ll try to do between 500 and 1,000 words per day. Otherwise, I may write in ten or even five minute sprints, as I’m moved to. It always amazes me how the words start to build and form a story.

I try to always carry a notebook and pen with me. Sometimes those sticky plot points that stubbornly refused to be solved while I’m sitting at the computer, will suddenly whisper their solutions to me and I want to be ready for them.

As far as ideas or plots for my books, I would say that, when I write, I am always trying to figure something out or explore an area of interest or concern to me. Alzheimer’s disease, illiteracy, flower arranging, depression, art, faith struggles, photography, journalism and alcoholism are some of the subjects I’ve featured in my books.

Of course, the key element in romance is that the hero and heroine fall in love and find their Happily Ever After, but there are always so many roads to travel before they get there.

I will say that the road from having a book accepted to seeing it on the shelves is longer and often rockier than I first expected. Even after a book has been contracted, my agent and editor will work diligently with me to ensure that it is as strong as it can possibly be. I do appreciate them so much for that. Some of my books have gone through some fairly intensive rewrites and, while that is never easy at the time, I can truly always see how the end result is much better.

No matter how hard the work is – because much as I love to write, it isn’t always easy – I am so happy that I can do so and it’s something I’ll never take for granted. Writing inspirational romance gives me the opportunity to combine two things that are so important to me; my faith and my creativity.

Thank you to the readers who are the most important part of this community we share. When you tell us you love our books, it makes it all worthwhile.
