Behind the Scenes with Violet Ridge’s Newest Cowboy Hero: Lucky Harper

Interview by Melanie Castleberry for the Violet Ridge Gazette

This reporter was fortunate to spend yesterday afternoon getting to know everyone’s favorite rodeo cowboy, Lucky Harper, at Gordon Irwin’s Double I Ranch.

MC: Thank you for taking time out of your busy rodeo schedule to talk to me.

LH: It’s my pleasure. Anything for my fans. They’re the best part of what I do. That, and the horses. Domino and I are looking mighty forward to our next competition.

MC: Let’s start with the obvious. Everyone in town is buzzing about your heroic actions. Are you wearing that sling because you saved little Audrey Irwin, Gordon Irwin’s granddaughter

LH: I was only in the right place at the right time. The sling is a precaution. I should be heading out to the next rodeo soon. I’d much rather talk about Domino or the next rodeo set to take place in Casper.

MC: Your humility and conscientious manner are two hallmarks that make you a fan favorite. Would you like to share where you were born and about your early life before you entered the rodeo circuit?

LH: Not much to tell. I’m mighty grateful to Cale and Vivi Padilla for taking in a kid from New York. Cale taught me everything he knows about the rodeo.

MC: Rodeo Hall of Famer Cale Padilla?

LH: Yes, ma’am. Cale and Vivi opened their home to me when I was only eighteen. They’re some of the nicest people you ever want to meet. That is, along with my best friends, Will Sullivan and Sabrina MacGrath Darling. They’ve settled in Violet Ridge with their respective spouses, Kelsea Sullivan and Ty Darling.

MC: Is that why you’re visiting our fair town?

LH: Everyone has been real welcoming on my previous visits. If I were ever to settle down, not that I’m in any hurry to do so, this would be a good place to land. A year ago, Will met the love of his life, Kelsea, and now Sabrina has settled down with Ty Darling. I just finished making a rocking horse for their daughter, Genie.

MC: By hand?

LH: Cale taught me woodworking by fashioning his chess board.

MC: That sounds like a fascinating hobby. Did you make a present for the couple whose wedding you’re set to attend? It’s the event of the season.

LH: Oh, Gordon Irwin’s wedding to the famous singer, Evalynne. Sabrina invited me, but it’s a family affair. They won’t miss me if I’ve already left.

MC: But the Violet Ridge grapevine told me just this morning you’re attending with our very own Elizabeth Irwin, the daughter of the groom.

LH: Lizzie? Oh, we’re just friends.

MC: I heard you’re a couple.

LH: Can you see someone as beautiful and intelligent as Lizzie with someone like me? She told me about her plans for the ranch, and she’s determined to see them through.

MC: I’m looking forward to seeing the two of you together when I cover the wedding this weekend.

LH: The rodeo is my home. Domino and I have many roads to travel, and new people to meet.

MC: Thank you for your time, and I hope those roads always lead you back to Violet Ridge.
