An Interview with Deputy Charlotte Walker from Deadly Mountain Escape

Welcome, Charlotte. I’m so glad you could join us today. Let’s start out by having you tell our readers a little about yourself.

Charlotte: I’d be happy to. My name is Charlotte Walker. I’ve lived in the Ruby Valley of Montana all my life. My family owns a ranch that has been in our family for several generations. I can’t imagine living anywhere else. I get to walk out my front door and see God’s beauty everywhere. The Tobacco Root Mountains are a constant reminder that He is there with us—just like those mountains—never changing. Always watching.

I’m a sheriff’s deputy and I head up our K-9 unit. My partner, Annie, is a bluetick coonhound who was the last dog trained by my fiancé.

I remember hearing about Ryan’s passing. He died in a fall, correct?

Charlotte swallows several times: That’s correct. Ryan was part of the search and rescue team. He wasn’t working that day, but I asked him to assist in finding a missing woman. He lost his footing and. . .died.

I’m so sorry. I can’t imagine how difficult that must be for you. I heard you were recently part of a rescue mission to bring down a human trafficking ring operating in Montana. You were assisted by a man who was once Amish?

A smile crosses Charlotte’s face: That’s right. His name is Jonas Knowles, and he not only saved my life, but he brought me back from being emotionally dead.

Do I detect a hint of admiration in your tone? Is there something developing between you and Jonas?

Charlotte: I guess you’ll just have to read the ending of the book to find out.

Any hobbies you’d like to mention? What do you do when you’re not working a case with Annie?

Charlotte: I love taking walks. Climbing. Occasionally reading.

What’s your favorite genre?

Charlotte’s brows rise: Suspense, of course. Anything that has danger in it, and I’m all in. But it must have a happy ending. These days, I’m all about happy endings.

I heard there was some new activity taking place at the old Christian youth camp outside of town. Wasn’t that where the human traffickers tried to kill you and Jonas.

Charlotte: It was. Now, it’s being reborn as a place for young girls who have been victims of human trafficking to go and heal as well as other troubled youths, thanks to Jonas.

What does the future look like for you and Annie? Jonas?

Another smile from Charlotte: For the first time since I lost Ryan, I’m happy. I actually look forward to each day and know that whatever future comes my way it will be a blessing from God.
