She is the only one who truly sees him.
Which makes her his greatest threat.

Black ops undercover agent Tane Temauri—code name Vapor—has made it his life’s mission to stay out of sight. Given the dangers inherent in his job, the last thing he can afford is to step into the open and become a target. Again.

Then a letter from a mysterious stranger changes everything. Although the letter was not meant for him, somehow, on a greater, cosmic scale, it feels as though it is.

But answering it will make Tane vulnerable.

Can he emerge from the shadows and risk everything for a woman he has never met?

If he does, more than his heart could be on the line.

So could his life.

And hers.

On Writing Romantic Suspense

by Sara Davison

I never intentionally set out to write romantic suspense, but when I began seriously writing fifteen years ago, that is what naturally came out. Likely because that has always been my favourite genre to read. I love getting so caught up in the suspense that my heart is pounding and I literally move to the edge of my seat. It’s a lot like watching a sporting event when your team is not playing but you still love the intensity and the fact that there is no way to predict what will happen at any given moment or what the final outcome will be. There is nothing like that pulse-pounding feeling.

The romantic element is equally important to me for two reasons. One, I am now and have always been a sucker for a good love story. An Affair to Remember, Casablanca, Gone with the Wind … even though they did not all have happy endings, the depth of emotion in romantic movies and books carries me along like a meandering river on a hot summer day. And when a suspense thread is woven throughout that love story, suddenly the hero and heroine have way more to lose. When the person they care so much about is in danger, the stakes go through the roof

It’s the difference between watching that sporting event I mentioned earlier, only this time with your favorite baseball team—the one you have lived and died with your whole life and that has never won the championship—playing in game seven of the World Series. Now you (or, in the case of romantic suspense novels, the hero or heroine) have so much more to lose because the fate of someone you love hangs in the balance. You are completely invested and one hundred percent engaged with every little thing that happens.

That, to me, is the beauty and power of combining suspense and romance.

In my latest romantic suspense novel, The Color of Sky and Stone, the main character, Tane Temauri, finds himself in that exact position, as evidenced by this exchange with his handler:

Beck locked his fingers behind his head. “Where do you see the two of you going from here? How could it possibly work?”

That’s the question I’ve been asking myself. The one I asked her when she came to my apartment. Unfortunately, I don’t have an answer for you.”

Beck pushed to his feet and paced the room. “Well, you better figure it out and fast. If Dario Solano is specifically targeting you, that changes everything.” He whirled to face Tane. “I guess the question is, can you live with putting her in that much danger?”

The question stopped Tane cold. The last thing in the world he wanted, the absolute last thing, was to put Lia in danger. But Beck was right. If he and Lia stayed together and Tane remained a DAG agent, particularly if he went after Solano again, that was exactly what he would do.

See? That combination of extreme danger and selfless love puts the main characters in a position that is as terrifying for them as it is thrilling for readers. And it’s the reason romantic suspense will always be my favorite genre to read and to write.
