“Your grandmother’s right.” He touched Jillian’s elbow, stopping on the sidewalk, midway between the building and the parking lot. “You don’t know what Tracy was thinking. You’re purely speculating.”

Her blue eyes met his as the breeze tossed her auburn tresses across her face. Did he dare tuck them behind her ear the way he used to? Revel in their softness?

She beat him to it. “Don’t you see? I used to think that way. Playing judge and jury, deeming people guilty without knowing the facts.” She lowered her head. “Now I’m getting a taste of my own medicine.”

“I think most of us are guilty of that at one time or another. But you’re not doing yourself or your baby any favors. So please, just try to forget the whole thing. Okay?” When all she did was shrug, he added, “Otherwise I might have to tickle you.” One of things he’d learned about her in their all-too-brief time as a quasicouple was that Jillian was so ticklish she could even tickle herself.

Her eyes narrowed. “You wouldn’t.”

Straightening, he crossed his arms over his chest. “Care to try me?”

She watched him for a long moment. “Sometimes you can be such brat.” Her eyes sparkled as she playfully shoved him.

“Come on.” He nodded toward their vehicles. “We have some donations to pick up.”

“And don’t forget the painting,” she added. “I cannot wait to bid those peachy walls adieu.”



Stuffing his hands in the pockets of his tattered jeans, he smiled as he turned for his truck. That little bit of playfulness just now had given him a glimpse of the old Jillian. The one who’d been carefree, bold and full of life. He could only hope to see more of her as the day went on.
