Christmas is my favorite time of year. And I get extra-excited when I propose stories to my editor, and she turns one of them into a holiday release. For the Sloan brother books, it happened that Josh and Vivian’s book, His Christmas Cowgirl, became a holiday set romance. I enjoy asking friends and acquaintances about their holiday traditions (and I love researching forgotten holiday traditions on the internet too). I love hearing about the traditions, small or big, that families share year after year without fail

In His Christmas Cowgirl, there is a collision of two families who celebrate Christmas very differently. Vivian’s family travels every Christmas, and this has been their long-standing holiday tradition since Vivian was a young child. On the flip side, Josh’s family spends Christmas at their family ranch. I knew it was going be fun, if not chaotic, when these two families came together and ended up spending the holiday under one roof. I come from a large family myself and we had rather chaotic and quite boisterous holidays when I was growing up. And those are some of my favorite memories. I like to think Vivian and Josh shared a holiday not soon forgotten in His Christmas Cowgirl as well.

One of our holiday traditions is baking cookies. We have recipes we always make and then each year I try to add at least one new recipe.

Here is one of our favorite family cookie recipes. This recipe has been passed down through our family. My older brother eats them off the cookie sheet right out of the oven.

Pecan Balls

Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter – softened, room temperature (My great-grandmother’s original recipe calls for
  • ½ cup butter and ½ cup shortening. I never seem to have shortening on hand so I use 1 cup of salted butter)
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons water
  • 2 cups flour
  • ½ cup chopped pecans
  • Powdered Sugar

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 325° F. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream butter. Then add sugar, vanilla extract, and water. Cream together until mixture is light and fluffy.
  3. Add the flour and combine. Stir in chopped pecans.
  4. Chill dough. I often chill my dough for more than an hour (although in my great-grandmother’s recipe, she never really specified how long she chilled her dough).
  5. Roll the dough into individual balls. (I use my large cookie scoop – I like my cookies on the larger size and with the larger cookie scoop I can get around 24 cookies from this recipe.)
  6. Bake for 15 minutes on a cookie sheet or until set. (I usually leave my cookies on the softer side, but that’s personal preference.)
  7. Remove from oven. (I let my cookies sit on the cookie sheet for a few minutes then I proceed to the powdered sugar). Roll each cookie in powdered sugar and then place on a cooling rack to cool
