Disclosure: Many thanks to Amazon Freevee for providing a sample of the product for this review. Opinions are 100% my own.

To be honest--- I am not a football fan. I mean, I went to a few high school games back in the day and even an NFL game several years back... but I honestly couldn't tell you the difference between a first down and a touchdown.

So, at first glance, the new Freevee docuseries-- God. Family. Football.-- would probably not be my first pick. Still, when I saw the trailer, I thought it looked interesting and when given the chance to check out the series before its release, I actually found myself looking forward to it.

Take a look:

God. Family. Football. follows ex-football player and high school football coach Denny Duron as he returns to once again coach the Louisiana-based team that he once led. Duron has been retired for 30 years, but decides to return to Evangel Christian Academy in Shreveport, La., after the one-time high school football powerhouse fell on rough times. Once home to 14 state championships in the last 20 years, the team is now coming off its worst season in school history. The series focuses on the 2022 high school football season as Evangel Christian Academy — which has sent more football players to the NFL and NCAA Division 1 college football programs than any other high school in the state — looks to rebuild.

Again, not knowing the first thing about football... there were some things in the show that didn't make sense to me personally. I'm not super familiar with all the terminology or how these championships really work or whatever. Do you have to know about football to enjoy this show? No. Do you have to enjoy football to enjoy this show? Still, no.

Certainly, if you do know about and enjoy the sport, you'll probably get even more out of it and appreciate it a lot more than I did. For example, you'll definitely appreciate that NFL quarterback Russell Wilson is an executive producer, or you'll know more about who Denny Duron is or the history of this particular football program and their national prominence. That all will certainly add to the experience, I'm sure.

Still even if you don't- like myself- we can all appreciate this story of working hard to accomplish something. We all love to root for a good comeback story. This is a story not just about the game, but the players behind it and I enjoyed getting to see their lives on the field and off. There were several moments throughout that had me laughing and I couldn't help but enjoy it. I think there is definitely something in this show that even us non-athletes can learn from.

More than anything, I really loved coach Duron's formula for success: "God first, family second, and football third." There's a great faith message in this series. Replace 'football' in that strategy for whatever your own passion is, and that is a lesson we can all apply to our own lives... the most important one being: GOD FIRST!
