Laura’s work as a nurse practitioner has pushed her to her breaking point. A trip abroad to visit her grandmother in Honduras promises a few days of relief, but when her abuela falls ill, Laura finds herself walking the halls of a hospital once more. Still wearing her scrubs, she could easily be confused for a local healthcare worker―and it’s a mistake that happens almost immediately. After a recent shootout, the local gang needs a doctor, and they don’t ask for what they want―they take it. In a split second, Laura is captured in a deadly case of mistaken identity. The outlook is dire until a mysterious rescuer appears, launching the pair on a desperate flight to freedom.

As a member of the ultraclassified guardian program, Manuel is responsible for protecting US assets in Central America. But when a job in Honduras goes terribly wrong, his skills are pushed to the limit as he races to get Laura out of the country alive. What begins as a connection forged in a shared ordeal quickly deepens, and Manuel and Laura must learn to trust their instincts―and their hearts―if they hope to survive.

Author Interview

Welcome, Traci! Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions and giving my readers a chance to get to know you and your new book Unseen.

I like to start these interviews the same way, with something fun to break the ice. Can you share 5 random facts about you that we will not find in your bio?

~ I love fresh salsa, but sadly I’m allergic to almost everything in it.

~ I love history, but I’m not a fan of research.

~ More often than not, I wear a sweater or sweatshirt around the house, even in the summertime, because I’m usually cold and my husband always wins the thermostat war.

~ When I travel, especially when in Europe, people are constantly asking me for directions. Apparently, I look like I know where I’m going even when I’m totally lost.

~ Mushrooms are one of my favorite foods.

When did you first discover you had a passion for writing?

I had the dream of being an author from the time I was in elementary school, but I didn’t start actively writing fiction until my senior year of college. Even then, it was simply a hobby that let me relieve stress and slip into a fictional world. Over the years, that hobby evolved until little snippets of writing finally turned into full stories.

What drew you to writing suspense?

Writing suspense happened naturally for me. I’ve always enjoyed trying to delve into why people do what they do. That curiosity combined with my background with the CIA made this genre a great fit for me.

Can you share a little bit about any research that went into writing this story?

I used to live in Venezuela, so between that and growing up in Arizona, I had a decent idea of the general culture of Latin America, but I did spent a good deal of time speaking to people from Central America and researching details specific to Honduras.

If you had to describe your main character(s) in this story in just three words each, what would they be?

Manuel – determined, loyal, resourceful

Laura caring, intelligent, diligent.

Can you tell us a little bit more about Unseen?

Both of the main characters in Unseen are victims of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, but in this case, those moments of chance serve to give them the chance to meet while also putting them in the position to help stop a violent gang from creating even more havoc in the future

Unseen is the 7th book in your Guardians series. Will readers who have not yet read the previous books be able to enjoy this one as a standalone?

Absolutely. All of the books in this series are written so readers can start on any of them. This one in particular has very little crossover with characters from the previous books.

What was the most challenging part of bringing this story to life? The most rewarding?

The most challenging part of writing this book was trying to balance my writing time with running the state swim meeting in Virginia (2021) and also chairing a writer’s conference. I spent a lot of time re-reading what I’d already written so I could remember what had already happened in the story since I’d worked on it last.

The most rewarding part of writing Unseen was when I received the comments back from my publisher’s BIPOC committee. While some of the evaluators had a couple of great suggestions, the general consensus was that my knowledge of Latin culture was quite accurate. (My time living in Venezuela and my summers in Mexico during my childhood certainly helped in that regard.)

What do you hope readers will take away from the book?

I hope Unseen gives readers a new appreciation of both the people who work so diligently to protect others as well as the beauty of Honduras and that country’s culture.

  4. I just wonder how she knows she loves fresh salsa if she is allergic to almost everything in it. That would have made me never try it.

  5. thanks for sharing the interview. I didnt like mushrooms until I went out with my fiance (now husband of 40 yrs) and he ordered these round things that were covered in breading of some sort. Ok I am up for something new. Oh my goodness, they were wonderful. When they were all gone I found out they were mushrooms. (yes he knew about my aversion to mushrooms) Now I love mushrooms also. I love this cover. Cant wait to read it. quilting dash lady at comcast dot net
