Tina Wheeler is a Publishers Weekly Bestselling Author and retired teacher. Although she grew up on the edge of the desert in Arizona, her favorite place to plot a new story is on a balcony overlooking the ocean. A Day in the Life of a Writer by Tina Wheeler
I wish I could say I wake up at the break of dawn, exercise, dress, eat a nourishing meal, and then spend the next ten hours writing at a well-organized desk. That is my goal—okay, my daydream. I’m not a morning person.
This is my typical summer writing day. Times are approximate.
8:00, maybe 9:00 if I stayed up late - Stumble out of bed when the alarm screams, brush teeth, make coffee, and watch a recording of Good Morning America. Husband comes out of his home office–the man cave–to chat and make a joke about something on TV. Then my seven-year-old granddaughter and her kitten call to FaceTime with their Mima—that’s me.
10:00 – Check emails, read a chapter written by one of my seven critique partners, then eat something easy to grab from the fridge. Make more coffee.
11:00 – Begin write-ins on Zoom with friends from Valley of the Sun Romance Writers. We work in one-hour blocks. If my granddaughter has called back or never hung up, she yells, “Time” to the other participants. A short chat is followed by more writing. I admit I have been known to type while listening to my granddaughter sing a Taylor Swift song. I’ve heard she has young fans, and since I can’t make out the lyrics, I don’t even know if the song is age appropriate. I hope so. At some point, her father will kick her off the phone, and I’ll get back to work.
12:00 – Make my third cup of coffee while the Roomba tries to chase me out of the kitchen so it can finish vacuuming. I return to my desk. I mean lap desk and laptop waiting for me on the recliner. Before writing again, I glance up at HGTV which has been on the whole time. Do I like the remodel job on this show? Probably. I usually do. Back to the write-ins until everyone has called it a day.
5:00 – Start dinner.
7:00 – Internal debate on whether or not I want to work on marketing. Tonight, it’s a yes.
8:30 – Put the laptop away.
My writing life also includes brainstorming lunches with critique partners, chapter meetings where we listen to speakers, networking and writing during a summer retreat, and more learning and networking during the fall Faith, Hope, and Love writers conference.
There’s nothing glamorous to see here, but I enjoy my life, especially when Harlequin sends a shipment of my Love Inspired Suspense books.
