Author Interview

Welcome, Loretta! Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions and giving my readers a chance to get to know you and your new book Blue Ridge Mountain Escape.

I like to start these interviews the same way, with something fun to break the ice. Can you share 5 random facts about you that we will not find in your bio?

Five random facts about me

1. While riding in a safari jeep, a rhino became angry and chased after us.

2. I visited a Maasai village in Kenya. A warrior did his wedding dance within inches of my face. I was nervous he’d kidnap me from my tent while believing I was his new bride. 😊

3. For one year, I worked as a customer service representative at a golf bag company.

4. I watch murder mysteries and cold case documentaries on television.

5. Although most everyone has a pet; I am not an animal person. I owned a Golden Retriever when my children were little, but now the closest thing I have to a pet is my stuffed Snoopy. Haha!

When did you first discover you had a passion for writing? I worked at my church as the Administrative Assistant for eighteen years. During that time, people randomly stopped by my office and poured their hearts out to me. The thought of writing stories where my hero and heroine must learn to trust God through their difficulties tugged at my heart.

What drew you to writing romantic suspense? I’ve always loved reading mysteries and watching suspenseful movies. So, writing romantic suspense seemed the logical genre to pursue.

What type of research went into creating this story? I Googled Forest fires and wildfire firefighters. I questioned my son- and son-in-law, who are firefighters in the city, for their input. Then I called the forest ranger station to talk to someone who could give me all the details I needed. The ranger talked with me at length and emailed me a copy of the firefighter's supplies catalog.

If you had to describe your main character(s) in this story in just three words each, what would they be? Kendall (Hero) is determined, trustworthy and protective. Haley (Heroine) is sensitive, deep-thinking and encouraging.

Can you tell us a little bit more about Blue Ridge Mountain Escape? A rescue story by fire fighter Kendall and his determination to save a beautiful lady from the raging wildfire. He longs to get a promotion in hopes his dad will finally be proud of him after he’d refused to carry on the family business. He learns through his near-death experiences life is too short to hold a grudge, everyone is salvageable, and love can be found in the least expected places.

What was the most challenging part of bringing this story to life? The most rewarding? The most challenging part of this story was making sure my fire fighter’s actions were as accurate to real life as possible. Learning the difference between a fire tornado and a fire whirl and which one is specific to my story’s location was interesting.

The most rewarding part of this story was the way the book comes to an end, where my fire fighter goes back into the fire to rescue an escaped convict. Kendall refuses to leave anyone behind, even if it means giving his life for another.

What do you hope readers will take away from the book? Trust is earned. Bad decisions affect the entire family. There is peace in reconciliation. Prayer works.
