“So, what exactly are swamps?” I ask Audhild while searching in a book titled, Fasting, Prayer, and Supplication.
She flips a page on her volume. “They are large, wet, and muddy.”
I picture the nomad women rolling around in the illusion’s muddy stream. “That doesn’t sound so bad.”
Her glowing red eyes settle on me. “They are miserable. Brackish water for miles. Trees grow right up out of the sluggish mess while the depths hide land like a treasure. The only place to survive is in the trees.”
“Like bird’s nests?”
“Something similar. Houses in tree villages are built among swaying walkways. They aren’t easily spotted due to the curtains of moss that grows from the limbs.” She makes a guttural clicking sound. “Not to mention the ghostly fog that comes off the water.”
“Don’t scare them.” Grandfather interrupts her. “The villages aren’t that doom and gloom. Plus, there are no such things as ghosts. It’s nothing more than swamp fumes.”
About the Author
Dawn Ford writes fantastical YA stories with a fairy tale flair. The Girl With Stars in Her Eyes, formerly Kingdom Come, won the 2016 ACFW Genesis Award for the Speculative genre.
