Tropes Used in Her Surprise Cowboy Groom

Sometimes, when I’m plotting a book, I play a game with myself. How many tropes can I fit into the story without going overboard? To answer that, I have begin by telling you a little about my story development process I generally have a very basic concept. For HER SURPRISE COWBOY GROOM, that was a career focused and workaholic wedding dress designer meets a laid back, stop and smell the roses cowboy. That’s my first trope. Opposites attract. He’s, of course, a cowboy, because that’s what I love to write. Trope number two.

Then, I decide on the setting. For this book, it’s the small-ish town of Payson, Arizona and, more specifically, the family’s wedding barn venue. There you go, two additional tropes: small town and weddings. Because I need to up the stakes, I make my cowboy hero a single dad. Another trope. Of twin girls. Yet one more. They’re starting to stack up now.

Next, I ask myself what’s driving my heroine to be successful? I give her a tragic past — her family lost everything when she was young. Worse, she was betrayed by her former fiancé and has trust issues. Why? Because she’s afraid of history repeating itself. This is one of my favorite tropes.

Lastly, I gave the hero an unusual occupation. He gave up his very cowboy job — owning and operating a team penning facility — and opened a glamping campsite, something he knows nothing about other than he won’t have to work as hard as he did before and will have more time for his little girls. What trope is this? Why, a fish out of water.

I tried counting but lost track. I don’t think a romance writer can have too many tropes, not as long as they all make sense, are organic to the final story, and build deeper, fully-formed characters. Now, if I suddenly threw in a Cinderella or nanny for hire element, that might have been too much. I suppose. Unless…..
