Welcome, Kyle! Thank you for taking the time to answer my
questions and allowing my readers a chance to get to know you and your new book
Good Gifts.
I like to start these interviews the same way, with something fun to break the
ice. Can you share 5 random facts about you that we will not find in your bio?
Sure! 1) I’ve lived in 7 states and 2
foreign countries during my life. 2) I speak French fluently and go there every
year. 3) I’ve had curly hair ALL my life. 4) I love cats! I was a mom to Oliver
for 17 years (and my travel pen name is after him.) 5) In addition to writing,
I have also had other professions: social worker, missionary, and language
teacher (English in France and French in the US!)
When did you first discover you had a passion for writing?
I was 10 years old when I knew I
wanted to write fiction. I wrote my first book when I was 11. I had many fits
and starts after that, but began writing seriously in 2009.
What drew you to inspirational fiction?
I always loved reading, but as a Christian, the idea that a
novel can be both entertaining and spiritually inspiring was a double win. As a
Christian author, I can weave Biblical truths into stories which can inspire
believers and plant seeds in nonbelievers (in a non-churchy way!)
Can
you tell us a little bit more about Good Gifts?
In Good Gifts, Nathan has left Brenner Falls, the small
town where he grew up, escaping the shame he felt being abandoned by his dad.
When he receives an inheritance from his uncle, he intends to return just long enough
to sell it and go on with his life. He reconnects with his high school friend,
Leah, who has her own issues from the past. It’s a story of growth and
redemption…as well as romance and surprises. There is also a church plant in
the story, which weaves an important thread through the story. (I have a soft
spot for church plants, having done this on the mission field.)
What was the most challenging part of bringing this story
to life? The most rewarding?
A theme involving an inheritance that is a building has been done many
times, and I wanted this story to be unique in its approach. Hopefully, I was
able to do that, in one way by making the “heir” the male in the story. It’s a
romance, so both characters share points of view, but Nathan is the one who
inherits and has to deal with those headaches while Leah has other challenges.
The most rewarding part was the surprises at the end, and of course, the happy
ending.
What do you hope readers will take away from the book?
The title, Good Gifts, struck me after I’d finished the
first draft. I hope readers will see that God showers us with good gifts all
the time and sometimes the gifts don’t look great at first, but he surprises us
with them. His surprises are always good for us.
This is the first book in the new Brenner Falls series. What can we look
forward to next in the series?
In the book, I
mention briefly another character, a single mom, called Blair McCartney. The
next story is hers. She is an aspiring fashion designer, but in order to raise
her son, has to work in a clothing factory at a sewing machine. Her dreams rise
far higher, though. She gets to know her new neighbor, Cooper, who returns to
town struggling with the loss of his brother. Don’t worry, there will be good
surprises in that story as well!
Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. Before you go, where can
readers follow along to see what’s coming next?
My website is www.Kyle-Hunter.com. That’s a great central place to connect. I have
newsletters and blogposts. They can also follow me on Goodreads and Bookbub. I
also have an Amazon author page, a Facebook page, and Instagram page.
