EXCERPT

Adele pulled out the lunch meat she saw in the refrigerator and, humming one of her favorite country songs, she went to work.

“Do you always sing when no one is watching?” Grady leaned against the doorway with one corner of his mouth tipped up.

Adele shut the drawer firmly, closed the refrigerator and willed away her embarrassment. And her sudden urge to brush his distractingly damp hair off his forehead. “Absolutely. I usually dance, too.”

“Don’t let me stop you.” His smile grew. He lifted his arm as if motioning to a dance floor.

She wanted to take his hand, let him guide her into his arms. On a dance floor. Under the stars. Right there. Stepping back inside those boundaries, she glanced down at her thick socks and wiggled her toes. “Unfortunately, I’m not wearing my dancing shoes.”

“You strike me as someone who would dance barefoot in rain puddles and wheat fields.” He pulled a coffee mug from the cabinet and filled it.

“Have you ever danced barefoot in the rain?” She leaned against the kitchen island and folded her arms over her chest.

“No.” His quick reply came out on a spurt of laughter. He sipped his coffee and considered her. “Can’t say I’ve ever even had the inclination before.”

She could change his mind. Might have wanted to if she wasn’t on a love lockdown. “I made you lunch.”

“Lunch.” He spoke over the rim of the coffee mug.

“Nothing special.” Nothing she wouldn’t do for anyone else. She waved to the paper bag on the counter. “A sandwich and a few other things. It’s Thursday. Figured you’d want to eat while you drove around town.”

He set the coffee mug on the counter behind him and approached the island. His gaze turned from curious to assessing and fixed on her. “You made breakfast, which, by the way, smells delicious. And lunch, too.”

“It’s not a big deal. It’s what I do.” Take care of people. I could take care of you, too. Take care of your heart if you let me. Ah, but could he take care of hers? No. Only she could do that. Adele waved her hand, brushing aside her thoughts, and rambled on, “I was up early. Hazard of having toddlers. Breakfast is an important meal. Everyone likes my French toast casserole, or so they say.” What if I said I like you?

Adele pressed her lips together and yanked her heart back.

But Grady moved in. Into her personal space. Close enough that she inhaled his aftershave. Close enough that she could finally touch his forehead if she only reached out. She kept her arms at her sides and her breaths shallow.

“So,” he said. Those compelling eyes of his drifted over her face, then returned to her gaze. Wonder and warmth slipped through his words. “This is what being taken care of by Adele Blackwell Kane feels like.”

Adele sighed from her fingertips to her toes. Maybe he could understand her. Maybe she could trust him with something as big as her heart. Not that she ever would. Still, she acknowledged the temptation. She asked, “Do you mind it so much?”
