AUTHOR INTERVIEW

Welcome back Toni! Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions and allowing my readers a chance to get to know you and your new book An Unlikely Alliance.

I usually start with 5 random facts about yourself, but being your second time here, we’ll mix it up a little!  Can you share 5 random facts about this new book?

1. Jalissa and Rider were never meant to get their own story, but reader fans of An Unlikely Proposal wanted to know more.

2. Jalissa’s dog went through multiple ages before I settled on one. J

3. We get to make scene suggestions for the cover and one of my suggestions was Jalissa and her dog staring at each other. I love the scenery they picked for the background, makes the Bluebonnet, TX of my imagination come alive.

4. I feel like I was the prickly Jalissa before I let God’s grace soften my rough edges.

5. I picked visuals on my Pinterst board for each character.

What was the most challenging part of bringing this story to life? The most rewarding?

The most challenging part was describing Jalissa’s anxiety. I have never dealt with panic attacks or anything similar like she has. I worried I wouldn’t accurately portray it so I had to do lots of research. The most rewarding aspects is seeing the finished project and knowing it’s going to readers’ hands.

What drew you to writing Christian romance?

I love God and I see His story in everything. Marrying faith and my love of romance books was a no brainer for me.

After so many novels, how do you continue to find inspiration for unique story ideas?

They’re everywhere! I also like the challenge of taking an idea that’s been done before (as all stories have) and making it uniquely me.

What does your personal writing process look like?

Sometimes I start with a book idea, other times a character. Regardless, I always develop my characters first before I ever start writing, because I know they’re the ones that tell the story. I don’t plot because I don’t want to know the ending.

Can you tell us a little bit more about An Unlikely Alliance?

It’s the story of two unlikely people coming together to raise funds for their town. Jalissa is concerned with the animal shelter as she’s the manager and has a love of all God’s creatures. Rider is concerned with SAFE, an anti-bullying program because he knows what it’s like to be harassed by other kids. As they work together, they discover the impression they have on the other isn’t an accurate one.

What do you hope readers will take away from the book?

That everyone has a backstory. You never know if that prickly person is hiding a deeper pain or the one who always jokes covers up their insecurities. Regardless, we all have past wounds and kindness goes along way.

Thank you again for taking the time to answer these questions. Before you go, are there any other projects you are currently working on that you can share?

Sure! I’m finishing up my manuscript for my next Bethany House book. It’ll release in 2023.
