Happily Ever After: On Creating a Beautiful Love Story Romance

As a reader and a writer, I believe there’s a difference between a love story and a romance. To me, a love story doesn’t always have a happy ending, hope of a happy ending, or a happily ever after. A romance always has a happily ever after.

We were created for love and relationships. God, our Heavenly Father, modeled perfect love for each one of us. However, we are flawed and things don’t always go the way we imagine.

When I became serious about writing for publication, I knew I wanted to write romance novels where the hero and heroine, by the story’s end, pledge their love and vow to spend their lives together. Of course, it’s a bit more complicated than that. In fact, it’s the characters’ journeys, the obstacles they overcome, and the lessons they learn on the way to that HEA that makes the story worth reading. If they meet and fall in love without any challenges, it makes for a boring story.

As a happily-ever-after girl for as long as I can remember, I was naïve in how love, marriage, and romance actually worked. I believed the Disney cartoons, rom-coms, and hundreds of books I’d read.

It wasn’t until I had gotten married at the ripe old age of twenty that I realized marriage is work. Hard work! And then if children are involved, then it becomes even harder. But it’s worth it.

My romance began when I was nineteen and working as a waitress in a local family restaurant. I met a handsome young (and hot!) Marine home on leave, and we decided to become pen pals. This was over thirty years ago, so there wasn’t texting or FaceTime, so we wrote letters. Two months into our friendship, we realized we wanted more and became a couple. For eighteen months, my husband courted me through letters, phone calls, and the occasional home visit until his next orders prevented the quick trips. Tired of being apart, we eloped. In October, we will celebrate thirty-two years of marriage.

But our happily ever after didn’t end at “I do.” In fact, it was just beginning. We had to learn to share our lives together in person. We had to learn the fine art of compromise, speaking in ways that built each other up, and learn how to apologize.

When I started writing, I realized all of my heroes had qualities of my husband. And for good reason. My husband is my real-life hero. He’s seen me at my worst and still loves me. He helps to bring out my best. I’m a better person for knowing him, loving him, and growing in my faith because of him. We don’t always see eye to eye, but we stand together on our love for each other.

When writing romance novels, it’s important to show the growth of flawed characters and to allow our characters to work through those obstacles together. Not only will it strengthen the novel, but it gives them a foundation to live out their own beautiful romance.

  2. The Father He Deserves strikes a cord with me since I'm now helping to care for a troubled little boy as his mother works. The father is not in the picture, and it's obvious that this little boy needs his father. I'm looking forward to reading the book.
