Today, we're talking economics and government.

I know, I know... fun stuff, right?

Now, I must admit these aren't my personal favorite topics, but alas, they are very important ones for us to learn. Not just as adults, but they can be great to teach to kids too. We want to raise our kids with a good understanding of how money and government works, so why would we not start them young? After all, kids learn so much better at a young age, right?

But, if we as adults find these concepts confusing... how on earth are we to teach them to our children?

Today, I am excited to share a book series that can help us to do just that, 'The Tuttle Twins'.

For too long, parents have been at the mercy of professional curriculum developers to instruct their children. History is watered down, key principles omitted altogether, and time and attention given to things of lesser importance. Freedom-loving parents have long been left alone to shoulder the burden of educating their children and passing down a love of liberty.
While there are many books to teach these ideas to adults, there has been a profound void in the children’s literature market. The Tuttle Twins series close the gap, helping parents convey the principles of freedom to their kids in a fun way.
Each book in this series focuses on a different aspect of the principles of a free society: free markets, competition, individual rights, the non-aggression principle, personal responsibility, protectionism, and a variety of other issues—all boiled down to core concepts that children ages 5-10 can easily grasp.

Sounds like a great series, right? I was recently sent the set to experience for myself. Initially, I expected these to be chapter books, but was actually pleasantly surprised to find that they were in fact picture books... longer perhaps than your typical picture book, but no where near as long as a chapter book either. I would say my 10 year old could finish one book in about 15-20 minutes or so. Great for independent readers, but still easy enough to be read to for those younger kids. Most importantly though, they were very easy to understand. My almost 5 year old didn't quite get ALL of the concepts, but my older child most certainly did.

Now, let's talk CONTENT. The series features the Tuttle twins: two curious kids who enjoy learning more about how things work. Hey, that sounds like a lot of kids I know, right? They learn these lessons through various people in their community- asking questions and observing the world around them. They learn lessons about liberty, the government and economics in a kid friendly way. Now, I'm going to be honest--- this series isn't going to be for everyone. It doesn't sugar coat anything, and really leans more toward a more conservative audience. If this is your family, you will LOVE introducing these ideas to your child at a young age. If that's not your family, you might want to read them yourself first before introducing them to your children.

Regardless of your political standings, there are some great lessons that all kids can learn from these books. The Golden Rule- perhaps my personal favorite in the series- takes a look at the difference between justice and revenge. It teaches kids that when they seek revenge or don't play fairly, things can escalate very quickly. It also shows how we can be on different teams, but still work together for the common good. Pretty amazing lessons, right? Another favorite was Spectacular Show Business, which looked at the idea of starting a business. But this wasn't just a cutesy book that sought to tell kids they could do anything they put their mind to, but REALLY showed what it took to have a business--- profits, supply demand, etc. Though not the primary lesson, Food Truck Fiasco also in part teaches kids that they do have a voice and power to make a change, to have their voices heard. These are just a few of the many great subjects covered in this series. Together they work to give kids a true and genuine understanding of business and economy. When kids understand how these things work, I feel like they have a better appreciation for what they have, and the hard work it takes to get there... isn't that something we should strive to teach our children?

Whether you are a homeschooling parent looking to expand upon these lessons in your curriculum, or just looking to teach kids a little something beyond what their school teaches them, these books can be great for all!
