Heroes. What do you think about when you hear this word? Do you think superheroes? A favorite athlete? The military? There are so many different viewpoint on what qualifies as a hero... but what does the dictionary say?

he·ro
ˈhirō/
noun
1.
a person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.

Taking a look at that definition, its easy to see why we all have so many different ideas on what a hero is. A hero can be someone who overcame tremendous obstacles to change the world or save a life. A hero can be an athlete who worked hard to be the best in their fields. Or a hero can be something as simple as a parent who encourages their child and believes in their dreams.

No matter what makes a person a hero, that heroism deserves to be celebrated! This is just what the new books from National Geographic Kids- The Book of Heroes and The Book of Heroines- offer:

The Book of Heroes

Everybody needs a role model! Discover the true stories of superheroes, rebels, world leaders, action heroes, sports legends, and many more daring dudes, all of whom played their part to make their mark, make a contribution, and make the world a better place.
From Abraham Lincoln to Sitting Bull, Stephen Hawking to Galileo, these cool guys had the boldness, bravery, and brains to meet the challenges of their day. With a fun design, engaging text, and high-quality photographs, this is ultimate hero guide and keepsake for 21st century kids.

The Book of Heroines

Everybody needs a role model! Discover true stories of superstars, war heroes, world leaders, gusty gals, and everyday women who changed the world. From Sacagawea to Mother Teresa, Annie Oakley to Malala Yousafzai, these famous women hiked up their pants and petticoats and charged full-speed ahead to prove girls are just as tough as boys...maybe even tougher. Complete with amazing images and a fun design, this is the book that every kid with a goal, hope, or dream will want to own.

With so many ideas of what makes a hero, it seems it would be difficult to encompass them all in one book, and yet these books to so wonderfully.  The Book of Heroines highlights heroes such as Mother Teresa, Marie Curie, Misty Copeland, Tina Fey, and Emma Watson. The Book of Heroes highlights heroes like Galileo, Sitting Bull, Michael Jordan, and Stephen Hawking. All of these individuals are vastly different, but through the accomplishments they made in their work and their life they are ALL certainly heroes in their own right. The heroes and heroines featured may not have much in common on the outside, but they tend to share seven heroic qualities-

Heroes are courageous
Heroes do the right thing
Heroes have compassion
Heroes are competent
Heroes are inspiring
Heroes never quit
Heroes leap to action

We loved learning about all of these heroes- all different, all heroic. It served as a great reminder for my children that you don't have to follow in someone's exact footsteps to make a difference. You don't have to be super strong. You don't have to fight wars. You don't have to be a musical genius. You simply have to be yourself and be your own best person, whatever that might mean, and we ALL have the ability to be a true hero.

Both The Book of Heroes and The Book of Heroines retail for $14.99 each and are great gift books for children ages 8-12.
