Books, books, books!

In my house, it is all about the books! We love to read! Our large collection of books is certainly proof of that. My kids love books that are full of fun... but as a mom, I love books that are educational- teaching them not just academics but also great lessons or about the world around them. Books like the ASPCA kids: Rescue Readers are ideal! Check it out:

Studio Fun International, a Reader’s Digest company, has teamed up with the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®), the first animal welfare organization in North America and the nation’s leading voice for animals. More than two million supporters strong, the ASPCA’s mission is to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States. As a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, the ASPCA is a national leader in the areas of anti-cruelty, community outreach and animal health services.

Sounds like a great cause, right? And the books are just as great! Each book is told from the point of view of each pet and is inspired by a real-life animal rescue story. They incorporate the importance of care, protection, and love of animals with a focus on the joy of each pet finding their forever homes. While we loved reading the fun stories as told by the pets, I have to admit, I really loved that we also got to meet the real life pets behind the stories too! And who doesn't love a happy ending?

Let's take a look at the books available:

  • I Am Daisy: Meet Daisy. She is so happy to be leaving the shelter with all those loud dogs. Travel along with her as she meets her new family, and discovers that "Oh, no!" they have a dog too! This hardcover book, written for a Level 2 reader, is based on a true adoption story and reinforces a basic understanding of animals and pet care.
  • I Am McKinley: McKinley has a new family and she is so excited! Experience McKinley's first day at her new home as she makes friends.
  • I Am Nibbles: Third in the ASPCA Rescue Reader series, this Level 2 reader follows the adventures of Nibbles, the class guinea pig as he goes home with a student for the summer. Beautifully illustrated and carefully written to be appropriate for readers aged five to seven, this book is perfect for encouraging kids to start reading independently.
  • I Am Picasso: Fourth in the ASPCA Rescue Readers series, this Level 2 reader follows the adventures of Picasso, a playful puppy that is adopted by a free-spirited artist and her young son. Beautifully illustrated and carefully written to be appropriate for readers ages four to seven, this book is perfect for kids just beginning to read on their own.

These particular books are a Level 2 reading level for early readers. My son is above this level but likes reading easy stories like this at bedtime. It's also a great length to read to my toddler too. But it would definitely be ideal for the little one just learning to read- short and right at their level. Still, my kids loved them nonetheless. They truly are just a fun set of stories that we can enjoy together. For more advanced readers, there are also chapter books...and board books for the younger readers so there truly is something to be enjoyed no matter the reading level!

These fantastic stories are available in paperback, library binding hardcovers and e-books. At just $3.99 each ($15.96 for all), these make for a great stocking stuffer this holiday season.

The best part? Not only are these books fun. Not only do these books teach kids about caring for animals and the mission of ASPCA. They also help support them! Four to five percent of the purchase price of every book goes directly to the ASPCA to help continue its mission! This is one gift that gives back too!
