What does it mean to be brave?

I recently asked my son this question, and his response was pretty much what I expected.

"It means to never be afraid of anything."

Pretty typical kid answer, right? But also a pretty unrealistic one. Is there any person in this world that can honestly claim they have NEVER been afraid? I certainly don't know of any!

You see, bravery is not necessarily the absence of fear. Sometimes being brave means knowing what to do when fear does happen. But how can we better understand that in a way that makes sense to kids?

Today I'm sharing a book that might just help, Lizzy the Lioness:

Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is ask for help! Encourage your little ones with the true meaning of bravery through the beautiful story of Lizzy the Lioness by New York Times bestselling author Lisa Bevere.

Boys and girls will love the story of Lizzy, a little lion who must learn what it truly means to be brave in the face of hard things. When she sees someone in danger, Lizzy tries her best to help, but she quickly learns that sometimes being brave means asking adults for help.

With a unique spin on the concept of bravery, Lizzy the Lioness is a timely picture book in an ever-changing world. Children will see that bravery is so much more than big muscles or loud roars but often is found in the tiniest people who have the courage to speak up when no one else will. By asking God for help and then bringing grown-ups into the picture, Lizzy shows kids that being brave doesn’t have to happen by yourself—it happens with help!

New York Times bestselling author Lisa Bevere’s first picture book will make waves with its unique and compelling message for families everywhere. Parents and children alike will enjoy the beautiful artwork as well as the story of communication and teamwork.

You don’t have to be the biggest to be the strongest, and you don’t have to be the loudest to be the bravest. Show your children God’s truest definition of bravery with the timeless story of Lizzy the Lioness.

This book is such a sweet book. Recently both of my kids had fallen in love with my all time favorite movie- The Lion King, and so I think this book appealed to them even more because of that. Even I could see some similarities with our beloved favorite Simba laughing in the face of danger and the equally lovable Lizzie! If you ask me, all great kids stories need a fun characters for kids to love and a great lesson to be learned. For my kids, they just want something fun! And this book has it all! We fell in love with Lizzy immediately and I loved the lesson that sometimes asking for help is the best thing we can do. While of course, we always want to be of help to those in need, sometimes it can be very dangerous to do that. As I read this I couldn't not help but think about the problem we have with bullying and violence in this world right now. When you see someone being bullied, especially as a child... what are we to do? If we jump in, are we putting our own selves at risk? Sometimes it truly is best to get a grown up to handle the situation. I think by teaching this lesson at a young age in a book like Lizzy the Lioness, we can truly teach our children how to better be brave.
