The kids have been out of school for several weeks now, so I think it's time we have a little talk about a not-so-fun subject--- the summer slide.

No, this isn't a cool new water slide at the local pool or even a backyard playground. Summer slide is the very real tendency for kids to lose some of the progress they've made in the previous school year during summer vacation. Did you know that two months of reading skills are LOST over the summer and that it can take up to two months from the first day of school for a student’s brain development to get back on track?

As a parent, that's something I want to avoid. I want my kids to start school right on track and ready to keep on learning. So, what are we to do? One of the best ways to do that is to keep them reading all summer long. I shared some tips on encouraging summer reading here.

Among those tips? Make reading fun!

For that, one of our go tos has become National Geographic Kids. Their books are always packed full of fun facts and vibrant photos that my kids LOVE to pick up. Nevermind the fact that they're extremely educational--- they're so fun, kids don't even think they're learning. Today, I'm excited to share with you one such book- National Geographic Kids Almanac 2018:

Kids can have fun keeping up with our quickly changing world with the New York Times best-selling Almanac, packed with incredible photos, tons of fun facts, crafts, activities, and fascinating features about animals, science, nature, technology, and more. New features include three chapters on engineering and technology, space and Earth, and life sciences; a guide to New Orleans, just in time for its 300th birthday; an updated Fun and Games chapter filled with all-new games, jokes, and comics; all new weird-but-true facts, crafts, and activities; 18 Facts for 2018 feature in every chapter; updated reference material, and much more.

Now I know what you're thinking... an almanac? That doesn't sound like much fun does it? But one quick look inside will quickly change your mind... this book is pack full of fun and interesting facts that will keep kids going back for more all summer long. You've got animals! You've got space! You've got geography! You've got culture! You've got sports! You've got history! All wrapped into one bright book! Your kids will learn fun facts about all of these topics and many more! There's even a section with fun and games like mad libs or mazes. My son enjoys the quizzes at the end of each section, and I love the 'homework help', which provides tips and tricks that are sure to come in handy when school begins.

With so much to read and see, not only will it help fight against the dreaded summer slide, it'll also help prevent the equally dreaded, "I'm bored!"
