Naturally, when I hear this question I cannot help but think of my husband. Oh sure, I suppose every veteran's wife probably says the same thing, right? But honestly, I have found my husband even more heroic AFTER getting out of the military.
During his time in the Marine Corps, I was constantly being told what a great Marine my husband was. I never asked for these compliments, there was no real reason for anyone to tell me as much... but they felt the need to let me know how appreciated he was at work. Of course, when you have a job you love and a job you've worked hard at, it's pretty easy to put in the hard work and dedication he did.
But after eleven years, his time in the military came to a surprisingly early ending and he found himself having to search for a new job. And what he found was an entry level job at a automotive shop bussing tires and changing oils. It didn't pay much and it wasn't glamorous... but it kept money coming in, so he took it. And gave it the same hard work and dedication that he had to his job in the military. In fact, he worked so hard that when after a few months he found a better job and decided to leave, they didn't want to lose him...and promoted him from his job at the bottom of the totem pole to a management position- second from the top! Amazing... but so well deserved. He could have easily thought he was too good for the job at hand and slacked his way through, but instead he worked hard and it paid off! Is it any wonder I call him my hero? It truly does not take a uniform to make a hero.
